It’s never easy setting work for a class when you re not able to be there in person. But organising cover for art has problems all it’s own. The main issue is not having a specialist teacher who will be able to manage art materials such as clay or acrylic paint effectively. That’s why it is so important to have a bank of art cover lessons that work.
You can deploy these whenever needed, knowing that the students will be completing a meaningful activity. Plus, your classroom will not be left in a complete mess at the end of the lesson!
Printable worksheets for cover
In an effort to improve the quality of artist research, I have created a set of artist study resources. Each of these works as a stand alone lesson. I have designed the worksheets to work in non-specialist classrooms and with non-art teachers. All the information required is on the easy-to-follow printable handout. And no messy materials needed!

You may notice in the list above that I’ve done more resources about male artists than female ones. It’s not something I’m happy about, and it is constantly on my mind to redress the balance where we focus too much on ‘old dead white men’ in the artistic cannon. My blog post from International Women’s Day 2018 has more artists women artists, and I am planning a couple more in the near future.
Additionally, you can find more artists featured in this blog post on artist research. With so many artists to choose from, I usually find there is one to link in with most projects. These are a great way to extend the artist references students have as they progress through Key Stage 3 and 4.
Art class room resources
Another useful resource to have on hand are these art themed word searches. Not a cover lesson by themselves, they are a handy extension task to have at the ready. You can buy the bundle of seven by clicking the image below.
